REpower to supply nine turbines for Michigan wind farm

REpower is supplying its MM92 machines for the Stoney Corners wind project near McBain

German manufacturer REpower is to supply nine wind turbines for an 18-megawatt wind project in Michigan.

The company’s US subsidiary, Denver-based REpower USA Corporation, has signed a third contract with project developer Heritage Sustainable Energy LLC to supply nine wind turbines for the Stoney Corners III project.

The wind farm planned for a site near the city of McBain, in southern Missaukee County, will make use of REpower’s MM92 type turbines, which have a rated power output of 2.05MW each.

Expected to be installed by summer 2011, the turbines will have a hub height of 100 meters.

REpower said the contract also provided an option for delivery of another 70 of the machines for other Heritage wind projects in Michigan.

Steve Dayney, CEO of REpower USA Corp., said: “We are delighted to further extend our collaboration with Heritage to a third contract for REpower turbines within the past year. Michigan offers a large number of excellent wind sites, and we are confident that we will continue to be a major participant in its wind energy future.”

Stoney Corners

Heritage, which has its head office in Traverse City, Michigan, is expecting to complete the Stoney Corners wind project in 2011. Power from the wind farm is being delivered to Detroit Edison.

Along with the first two phases of the wind farm, Stoney Corners I and II, the third phase will mean the site totaling 25 turbines, seven turbines with a hub height of 80 meters and 18 turbines with 100 meter hub height.

The companies are to agree a 12-year service package for all the turbines at the site.

Marty Lagina, CEO of Heritage Sustainable Energy LLC, said: “Heritage is very pleased with our relationship with REpower and the performance of the turbines at our Stoney Corners wind farm – we look forward to continued success with the next phase of development.”

REpower, which is a Germany-based company majority-owned by India’s turbine company Suzlon, has now installed or sold more than 420 wind turbines in the United States, comprising 800MW generating output.

I was biking up to the Bridge from GR and rode by this wind farm. I had no idea it was there and was blown away by the sight of the white turbines against the background of the green hills and blue sky. There were about 10, all peacefully working away, a glimpse of the future! I loved it.
