Iberdrola is the second largest operator of wind farms in the US
Spanish-owned wind developer Iberdrola Renewables has agreed a power purchase agreement with Wisconsin utility We Energies, to sell 50 megawatts of power from a wind project in Iowa.
The deal will provide renewable energy from the 160MW Barton Wind Power Project, which is in operation near Kensett.
We Energies, which is based in Milwaukee, signed the PPA as part of its efforts to meet the “increasingly aggressive” renewable energy target of Wisconsin, where the company serves 1.1 million electricity customers.
The state target requires utilities in the state to provide 10% of the utility’s electricity from renewable sources by 2015.
As well as buying in renewable electricity from out of state, We Energies is also currently working to develop its own wind energy generating capacity (see this BrighterEnergy.org story).
Barrett Stambler, vice president of origination for Iberdrola Renewables, which has its head office in Portland, Oregon, said: “We are able to supply energy from an operating wind power plant while We Energies ramps up its own wind farm construction. We look forward to doing more such business with We Energies in the future.”
The Barton wind farm began operations in Worth County in June last year, with the first power deliveries made to We Energies on January 1, 2010.
Iberdrola Renewables said it is now the second largest wind operator in the US, with installed capacity of nearly 3,600MW spread across 17 states.
Part of Spanish energy giant Iberdrola, the company’s 39-strong US wind farm fleet provides more than 30% of its global generating capacity.
