New Jersey landfill to capture gas for energy production

A new 3.2MW landfill gas project is to be built at a municipal landfill site operated by Sussex County in Lafayette, New Jersey.

SX Landfill Energy LLC, based in Mays Landing, NJ, will design, build, own and operate the renewable energy facility under a 20-year agreement with the Sussex County Municipal Utility Authority.

The company is a subsidiary of Energetic, the joint venture between NJ energy project developers Marina Energy, which is itself a subsidiary of South Jersey Industries, and another NJ energy developer, DCO Energy.

The new SX Renewable Energy Generation Facility, as it will be called, is expected to be operational by the summer of 2011.

Fred Eckert, Energenic’s senior vice president of business development, said: “In addition to ensuring that Sussex County will be able to enjoy a reliable and sustainable energy future, this project underscores Energenic’s commitment to identifying and pursuing energy solutions that fit our changing energy landscape.”

The new facility will capture landfill gas – a methane-rich mixture of gases emitted from decomposing waste in the landfill.

It will use two Caterpillar 3520 engine generator sets to generate power from the gas, and will be connected up to the electricity grid to sell the 3.2MW of energy generated.
