Zero launches 2010 electric motorbike line-up

March 18, 2010

Zero Motorcycles says this year's models have better acceleration and higher top speeds

Californian firm Zero Motorcycles has launched its 2010 product line of electric motorbikes.

The company said its new Zero S, DS, X and MX bikes had added power, increased acceleration and enhanced power pack technology.

With higher top speeds and color graphics for the first time, Santa Cruz-based Zero said it was the first and only electric motorcycle company to launch four distinct models worldwide.

Gene Banman, CEO, Zero Motorcycles, said his company was blazing a path for electric motorcycle technology.

He said on Tuesday: “Our engineering team has revamped, redesigned and tested four models that have considerable improvements for 2010. The result is more power on the street, a new look and an unparalleled riding experience.”

Mr Banman said demand had pushed his company to “aggressively” expand across the US and around the world during 2009.

This year’s bikes include a new air induction system, which allows for more horsepower from lighter and more compact motors by increasing airflow through the system, along with new throttle technology to provide exacting control over acceleration.

The bikes also have new power pack technology allowing for a longer battery life, more power and greater acceleration.

Models

The Zero S model is designed for urban conditions, with a 50-mile range and a top speed of 67 miles with a weight of 270 lbs. Priced at $8,995 after a 10% federal tax credit, the vehicle is available now for shipping from the end of March.

The rugged Zero DS is designed for a variety of surfaces, including dirt tracks and the street. Also priced at $8,995 after federal tax credits, it can be purchased now and will begin shipping in the US at the end of April.

The tough Zero MX is designed for bigger jumps with a new suspension system that can absorb “aggressive” terrain, with an easily changeable power pack that offers two hours of track riding time. It starts at $8,295, beginning shipping at the end of March.

The Zero X starts at just $7,495, and with a weight of just 151 pounds it is designed for trail riding and begins shipping at the end of the month.
