Alliance formed to source biomass power fuel in Washington

February 10, 2010

The new alliance will seek to exploit the huge potential for biomass fuel in the Washington forestry sector

A new alliance between biopower company Adage LLC and forestry equipment manufacturer John Deere has been formed to strengthen the supply of wood fuel for biomass power projects.

Adage, itself a joint venture between North Carolina-based energy utility Duke Energy and French engineering firm Areva, said its work with John Deere would seek to both expand the use of woody biomass and also raise public awareness about the renewable fuel.

The alliance will begin its work by developing a collection and transportation system for waste wood to supply the Adage biomass power station being proposed for Mason County, Washington, 80 miles west of Seattle.

The project will use John Deere’s low-impact Biomass Harvesting Systems, the companies said.

Adage is planning a $250 million biopower plant in Mason County, a facility that would generate 55 megawatts of power – enough for more than 40,000 homes.

“John Deere has a proud history of both innovative environmental stewardship as well as customer dedication, and we believe our alliance with ADAGE builds on both,” said Domenic Ruccolo, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Construction & Forestry Division.

“At same time, by working with ADAGE to support its biopower facility, we can help generate new opportunities to revitalize forestry communities and create sustained jobs for loggers and others that serve these communities.”

Olympia-based Adage said it was aiming to tap the “great potential” in the Washington region for biomass resources.

Reed Wills, President of ADAGE, said: “The project will combine state-of-the-art biomass power technology with innovative forestry equipment that can make Washington a leader in the industry. We believe that building a vibrant biomass industry means new jobs, healthier forests, and a stronger energy portfolio for Washington.”

Adage plans to begin construction of the Mason plant in late 2010, expecting to create around 400 construction jobs and 100 permanent jobs when the facility begins operations.
