WindTamer Corporation has completed installation of two rooftop-mounted small wind turbines at a shopping and entertainment complex in Syracuse, New York.

The company based in Rochester, NY, deployed two 4.5GT WindTamer turbines at the Carousel Center, supported by a federal grant.

Each unit is expected to generate around 3,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.

The installation marked the first time the company installed its turbines on a roof, as well as the highest installation to date.

Adeeb Saba, Vice President of Operations for WindTamer praised lead engineer David Hofmeister and his team for achieving the milestones.

He said: “The team cleared a number of first hurdles for the company, including our first roof-top mount, our highest installed unit to date, new design elements, the smooth and rapid navigation of the permitting process and the development of a maintenance access plan.”

The new wind turbines were installed on the southeast and northeast corners of the new three-story, 60-foot-tall 1.3 million square foot expansion of the Carousel Center.

The Center expansion has already been pre-certified at the LEED Gold level of building efficiency, the second highest level.

“We had a great experience working with WindTamer and their team of engineers through the design, permitting and installation process,” said Melissa Perry, Director of Sustainability for Destiny USA. “The WindTamer turbines will be an excellent demonstration for the successful use of wind as a renewable source of power in urban areas.”

WindTamer specializes in Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbines, which have a diffuser that looks a little like a hood, working to draw in air to improve turbine efficiency and reduce noise.

The 4.5GT has a rated output of 1.3kW and a 4.5-foot rotor diameter.

It is the smaller of the two WindTamer turbines available. The company also offers the 8.0GT, which has a 4.8kW rated output and an eight-foot rotor diameter.
