Construction underway for 100-turbine Illinois wind farm

August 20, 2010
Construction has begun at a site near Bloomington, Illinois, set to feature a 150-megawatt wind farm.

The White Oak Energy Center is set to include 100 wind turbines, each rated to produce up to 1.5MW of power, supplied by GE.

It is located on farmland in central Illinois, along the McLean and Woodford County lines.

The facility is being developed by Chicago-based developer Invenergy Wind, with Minnesota company Mortensen Construction now beginning its task of building access roads, foundations and the turbines themselves.

The wind farm is expected to have an operational start in the spring of 2011.

Mortenson

White Oak is set to become the fourth wind project Mortenson has built in Illinois, and when complete the company will have been responsible for building around 40% of the state’s 2,000MW of wind generating capacity.

Tim Maag, vice president and general manager of Mortenson’s Renewable Energy Groups, said: “We are excited to be building another wind energy project in Illinois and look forward to partnering with the local community to safely deliver this project to our customer, Invenergy.”

Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction entered the renewable energy market in 1995 and has since constructed around 5,000 wind turbines across North America.

The firm also builds solar, biofuels and hydropower facilities.

I live in Bloomington. I would like to show my grandson the construction of a wind turbine. Where can I go to see one the week of the 25th of June?
