Largest ocean energy generator in US produces first power

ORPC testing out its tidal generator in Maine, with its world-class research vessel Energy Tide 2

The largest ocean energy generator ever installed in the US has successfully generated grid-compatible power at a site in Maine, according to its developer.

Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) revealed yesterday that its Beta Power System, a 60-kilowatt tidal power generator, has generated power at Cobscook Bay, Eastport.

The turbine generator unit is deployed below the company’s research and testing vessel, the Energy Tide 2.

ORPC, which has its offices in Portland, Maine, said performance test results suggested the turbine’s electrical output “meets or exceeds expectations” for a full range of current velocities.

Data will be used to fine tune the technology ahead of its planned installation in Eastport in late 2011, where it is to be connected up to the New England grid via the Bangor Hydro Electric Company.

Opportunities

Chris Sauer, president and CEO of ORPC, said: “Proving the efficacy of the Beta Power System and its ability to generate grid-compatible power day in and day out is a huge milestone for America’s ocean energy industry.

“It reaffirms the limitless opportunities to advance the nation’s renewable energy agenda and ensure a more sustainable future.”

ORPC believes tidal energy could provide Maine with a billion-dollar industry in the next seven to 10 years, creating “hundreds” of jobs.

Waters around Eastport offer some of the most robust tidal currents in the world, the company said.

Technology

The ORPC technology uses cross-flow turbines engineered with composite materials, along with a permanent magnet generator and a control system that can turn variable electrical output into grid-compatible power.

The company has been working with the University of Maine for three years testing the technology and monitoring its environmental impacts.

Working with preliminary permits from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, it is currently seeking full pilot project licenses for sites in Maine and Alaska.

Over the next two months, ORPC will work to demonstrate use of the device to provide an electrical supply for the US Coast Guard at Eastport, coupled with a battery system.

Captain James McPherson, commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector in Northern New England, said: “The Coast Guard in Maine encounters the power of the elements on a daily basis. Capturing some of these sustainable forces to help achieve our energy needs is a prudent and responsible thing to do.”
