The Penascal complex is now Iberdrola's largest wind project
The US government has handed $109 million in grants to wind farm developer Iberdrola Renewables for the next phase of its Peñascal wind farm in Texas.
The federal stimulus funding comes for the 202-megawatt Peñascal II wind farm, located in Kenedy County, although it will be reinvested into new US wind projects, the company said.
The facility uses 84 Mitsubishi MHI92 wind turbines, each rated to generate 2.4MW of power, starting up earlier this summer (see this BrighterEnergy.org story).
The second phase development doubles the size of the Peñascal wind complex, which now produces enough power to supply around 150,000 homes.
The funding award brings the total in stimulus funding awarded to the Spanish-owned wind development company to a total of $976 million.
Iberdrola said today that the award of such funds was “crucial” to its focus on wind projects in the US, where it is planning 1,000MW of new capacity in both 2011 and 2012.
The second largest operator of wind farms in the US, the firm now has 3,877MW of installed capacity through 41 wind farms in 23 states. A further 850MW is currently under construction.
