San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom relaunching the GoSolarSF program last week
San Francisco has re-opened its solar power incentives program for homes and businesses for the 2010-2011 financial year.
The GoSolarSF has already provided $10 million to support 1,172 solar projects since it was first launched in July 2008.
The city has now allocated a further $5 million to help its residents get into cleaner energy, of which $2 million is set aside for low-income homeowners.
Applications for the funding are now being accepted from residents, businesses and non-profit organizations.
“GoSolarSF has more than doubled the number of solar installations in our City and created dozens of jobs,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom last week. “This program is literally transforming how our homes and businesses generate and consume electricity rooftop by rooftop.”
Any resident or business in San Francisco that is on a meter and pays an electricity bill is eligible for the GoSolarSF incentive, so long as they work with an installer participating in the city’s Workforce Development Program, or alternatively a non-profit installer.
This year, extra incentives will be available for projects installed by companies that have their principal place of business within San Francisco itself.
A total of over 4.3 megawatts of solar energy has been installed or will be installed shortly under the program, according to city officials.
“With GoSolarSF, solar is no longer a luxury reserved for the wealthy,” said SFPUC General Manager Ed Harrington. “We’ve put solar in reach for many more San Franciscans and stimulated our local economy with new green jobs and a growing solar installer industry.”
