The biomass fuel for fireplaces and campfires is made from Giant King Grass, a proprietary, fast-growing perennial grass.
Viaspace, which is based in Irvine, California, first unveiled its new product at the National Hardware Show in Las Vegas earlier this month.
It said yesterday that Georgia company JJ International, Inc., will be its distributor selling to retailers in the US.
Viaspace Chief Executive Dr Carl Kukkonen said: “We believe Green Logs are the first manufactured fire logs to be produced solely from a dedicated renewable energy crop.
“Green Logs have a zero net-carbon footprint, completely avoid the use of petroleum products which also produce net carbon emissions, and burn up to 66% longer compared to conventional manufactured logs currently being sold.”
Viaspace both grows the Giant King Grass crops and manufactures Green Logs at a facility that started up in China last month. The company said growing the crops and producing the Green Logs itself meant it could offer the product cheaper than competitors.
Dr Kukkonen said manufacturer fire logs represent a $400 million annual market in North America, with more than 100 million logs burned each year, mostly made from woodchips and sawdust.
Orders are now being taken for the Green Logs, with first deliveries expected in August.
Ultimately, the company has a strategy to use its Giant King Grass as a feedstock for biomass power plants and for the production of liquid biofuels and biomethane.
