UQM to supply propulsion systems for EVI electric trucks

May 19, 2010

UQM will provide 150kW PowerPhase systems for medium-duty EVI vans

Colorado company UQM Technologies, Inc., is to supply its 150-kilowatt PowerPhase propulsion systems for use in all-electric trucks made by California’s Electric Vehicles International.

The firm based in Frederick, Colorado, said the first of 50 PowerPhase systems would begin shipping out in June, for completion by October 2010.

The systems will be used in EVI’s new all-electric medium-duty truck, the EVI MD, and the all-electric walk-in van, the EVI WI.

William G. Rankin, UQM Technologies’ President and Chief Executive Officer, said: “The exceptional torque delivery, efficiency and top speed performance of our propulsion system allow this vehicle to deliver the type of performance truck users expect.”

The EVI MD and WI vehicles will be tailored to suit commercial customers, but will offer gross vehicle weight ratings of between 14,000lbs (Class 4) and 26,000lbs (Class 6).

The UGM PowerPhase propulsion system will work with a 6-speed Ultrashift automatic transmission, providing a 60mph top speed and 115-mile range per charge.

The vehicles will be using lithium iron magnesium phosphate batteries from Valence Technology, Inc.
